the pumpkin on the large sheet that extends above the
smaller sheets. Attach a small piece of velcro above,
below, on the right, on the left of the pumpkin, at the
bottom of the page that said far and on the back of the

Activity
1
Objective:
Describe the proximity of objects in space (near,
far, close by, below, up, down, beside, and next to.
Teacher
will discuss with students words that tell where things
are. Students can brainstorm some words that they already
know. The teacher will read through the book Spider,
Spider, as the book is read place the felt spider in the
position stated in the text. Read the book again and this
time let a student come up and place the spider in the
correct position. Discuss why they put the spider there.
Activity
2
Objective:
Describe the proximity of objects in space (near,
far, close by,
below, up, down, beside, and next to.
Students
will construct Spider, Spider books. Give each student 3
white pages and have them fold them in half. They may
chose the color of construction paper they wish for their
cover and fold it in half.
Hand
out the page with the first lines of the story written on
them. Have them cut them apart and paste them in order in
their book. They should be numbered to show their order.
Instruct them to draw their pumpkin on each page and place
the spider in the right place by reading the sentence.
Instruct students if they aren’t sure where their spider
goes to ask someone at their table. If they are still
unsure remind them to raise three fingers and you will
come. Time permitting, they may write the second line of
the story on each page.
As
they are finishing give them a felt spider and a piece of
yarn. Staple one end of the yarn to the cover of the book
and glue the other to the back of the spider, (so the
spider is attached to the book).
Ask
each student to share his or her book. They are to place
their felt spider on the pumpkin to show its proximity
according to the sentences. Teacher and students can help
read the text since these will not all be familiar words.
Teacher
will note if the student places the spider in the correct
positions.
