Instructional
Activities:
1.
Teacher will tell students that today they are going
shopping at the class Candy Store to purchase candy to
decorate their gingerbread houses. Everyone will get 25
cents to spend at the store.
2.
Teacher will give students money, calculators, and
preprinted list of candies for them to record their
purchase. Then show the students the class chart of the
candy and review the prices of each. Explain they can buy
some of all the candy or just one kind of candy to use for
decorating the gingerbread house they are going to make.
Explain that they can not go over 25 cents.
3.
Next teacher will review with students how to use
calculators to add and to subtract. Then explain that they
will need to decide which candy they want and how much of
each and record the cost of it on the candy list. Tell the
students that after recording the candy they want and the
cost then they will need to total up their purchase using
the calculator to add up the amounts of each candy they
chose. Next the students need to make sure they have not
gone over 25 cents, by using the calculator to subtract
total from 25 cents.
4.
Students will make choices of candy they want to purchase.
Students will record choices on candy list and add up to
make sure they have enough money to buy what they want.
Students will count out money to make their candy
purchase.
5.
Teacher will give each student their milk carton, 6 graham
cracker squares, and 3 tablespoons of frosting on a paper
plate and a pop sicle stick. Teacher will demonstrate how
to spread frosting on milk carton and place graham
crackers on top of frosting. Remind students to make sure
they have frosting left to help attach the candy to the
house.
6.
Students will begin to make gingerbread houses. While they
are working on the houses, the teacher will have two
students come to the store to purchase their candy.
Students will bring their candy list, and money and tell
teacher what they want. Teacher will use cash register to
check students total. Students will get candy in a ziplock
sandwich size bag, count out the correct amount of money
to teacher. Teacher will be doing her assessment during
this time.
7.
Students will continue to come to Candy Store two at a
time until everyone has been to the store. After
purchasing the candy they will decorate their gingerbread
house using frosting to attach the candy to the house.
When they are finished they can put their house inside a
gallon size ziplock bag to take home.
8.
If a student finishes early they may work on the computer
program "Jump Start First Grade" to improve math
skills, or write about how they made their gingerbread
house.
