Half sheet of handwriting paper

Pencils

8) Rubric:

/

Student got the correct word on the fifth clue.

.

Student did not get the correct word.

9) Instructional Activities:

Choose a word that you would like them to review.  Write the word on a piece of scratch paper and stick it in your pocket. Give each student a half sheet of handwriting paper. Ask them to number their paper from 1 to 5.

Instruct them that you are going to give them clues to the word you have in your pocket. They must listen carefully to all the clues. After each clue they are to write down a word they think matches that clue. If the next clue matches the word they wrote down earlier, they may write the same word again.

When picking out clues, look carefully at the word you chose.  You may point out the number of letters it contains, the vowel or a particular letter combination.  By the fifth clue they should all have the word, if they are listening carefully to the clues.

Possible Clues:

1.     It is a word from the word wall. (always start with this clue)

2.     It has four letters. (narrows down the search)

3.     It begins with the letter t.

4.     It has the letter h in it. (focusing on the th pattern)

[word wall words - them, then, they, this]

5.     It finishes the sentence: I like to play with _______ toy.

Everyone should have written this for number five. Take the word out of your pocket and ask who was able to read your mind. Ask who had this written for number four, number three, number two, and number one.

Give everyone a round of applause for being able to read the teacher’s mind.
