Overview:
The teacher and students will read story The Little Red
Hen by Paul Galdone and discuss events in the story.
Students will choose a character from story to make a
paper bag puppet. Students will work together in groups to
retell story in the correct sequence. Students will help
teacher make bread using a bread machine and compare how
they made bread to how the Little Red Hen made bread using
a Venn Diagram.

Paper bags (lunch size)
Copies of character puppets (hen, mouse, cat, dog)
Crayons, scissors, glue for each student
Bread Machine, or bake in an oven, or buy a loaf of bread
1 box of Bread Mix and ingredients listed on box
Butcher paper with a pre-drawn Venn diagram
Paper for each student with pre-drawn Venn diagram
Assessment:
Teacher observation/checklist of students ability to
correctly tell what happened in the beginning , middle,
and end of story The Little Red Hen. Teacher will
check student's Venn Diagrams to see if they have
correctly compared how we made bread to how the Little Red
Hen made bread.

Instructional
Activities:
Day
1 - 45 Minutes
1.
Teacher will introduce vocabulary words on word cards to
the students, wheat, grind, thrash, hen, and mill.
Students and teacher will discuss the meaning of
vocabulary. Then the teacher will tell the students today
we are going to read a story about the Little Red Hen
2.
Teacher will lead students on a picture walk through book
and discuss characters, and setting of the story.
3.
Teacher will tell the students before reading story that
they need to pay attention to the sequence in which things
happen in the story. The teacher will review sequence of
events and that it means what happened in the beginning,
middle, and end of story.
4.
Teacher and students will read story and discuss the
sequence of events in the story.
5.
The students will choose a character from story and make a
paper bag puppet. **You might want to put names of
characters in box on slips of paper and have children
choose one to avoid disagreements about what puppet they
want.
** (To make puppet give each child copy of character they
chose, they will color and cut it out, and glue to bottom
of paper bag.)
6.
If students finish early they can reread the story.
Day
2 - 45 minutes
1.
Students and teacher will reread The Little Red Hen and
discuss sequence of events of story.
2.
Students will work in groups of four with character
puppets and retell story in correct sequence. Give
students about five minutes to practice in their groups.
(You will need to set up groups according to what puppets
the students made. Each group should consist of hen,
mouse, cat, dog.)
3.
Teacher will circulate among students and question them
about what happened in the beginning, middle and end of
story. Teacher will record students answers on checklist
according to Rubric.
4.
If a group finishes before teacher gets to them they can
draw the sequence of events on paper and label.
5.
Students can take turns performing for class, or make
arrangements to perform Kindergarten classes or you may
wish to invite parents.
Day
3 - 45 minutes
1.
Teacher will begin with reviewing with students how the
Little Red Hen made bread.
2.
Teacher will tell students that the class is going to make
bread today.
3.
Show students bread machine and bread mix. Students will
help teacher mix ingredients for bread and put into bread
machine and bake.
4.
Teacher will lead the students in comparing the likeness
and differences of the Little Red Hen with the other
characters in the story on a Venn Diagram drawn on the
board. The students will tell teacher how they are alike
and different. Teacher will ask where she will write their
answers on the Venn Diagram.
5.
Then teacher will tell students that they are going to
compare how they made bread with how the Little Red Hen
made bread on a Venn Diagram.
6.
The teacher will give each child paper with pre-drawn Venn
Diagram already labeled with how we made bread, and how
the Little Red Hen made bread.
7.
Teacher will review diagram and instruct students to
record either with pictures or words how they are alike
and different.
8.
Students will share answers with class when finished and
the teacher will record on class Venn Diagram.
9.
If a students finishes before sharing time they can record
their favorite part of the story in their Story Journal.
10.
Teacher will take up student's Venn Diagrams and assess
according to rubric.
