The Billy Goats Gruff and the Days of the Week

Grade Level:  First      Subject:  Math

1) Core Curriculum Objective: Sequence days of the week and months of the year.  (1ME1-1)

2) Overview:   Students will hear the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff and then act out the story using "stepping stones" marked with the days of the week. The students must say the days of the week in the correct order to get to the other side of the river without being eaten by the troll.

3) Purpose/Essential Question:

What is the order of the days of the week?


4) Time Frame: one forty-minute class period

5) Resources/Materials:

A copy of The Three Billy Goats Gruff

Long piece of blue paper (river)

7 paper "stepping stones" marked with days of the week

Troll mask

Three billy goat masks

 

6) Assessment:

Given a set of days of the week cards, the student will place them in the correct order (beginning with Sunday as the first day).                  

 

Teacher uses the rubric to score.

 / Student recites all of the days of the week in the correct order beginning with Sunday.
. Student recites all of the days of the week in random order.
. Student recites some of the days of the week.
- Student cannot recite the days of the week.

  

7) Instructional Activity:

Teacher reads story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff to students.

After hearing the story, teacher spreads a long sheet of blue paper

On the floor. The teacher then shows the students the paper stepping stones with the days of the week written on them. The teacher tapes them in sequential order across the river, beginning with Sunday. A student is chosen to wear the troll mask and wait on the billy goats to cross over. The teacher explains that each goat (student) must step on the stones and correctly say the days of the week, in order to avoid being eaten by the troll. To add to the fun, the children can choose to be the big, middle-sized, or small goat and speak in the voice tone that the chosen goat used in the story.
