Curriculum Connections - Directions for Writing

Complete the Richland One Curriculum Connections form for an ORIGINAL lesson or unit to teach a core curriculum objective or objectives.

A lesson is instruction that is focused on one discipline and covers one to three classroom sessions. The lesson should focus on one core curriculum objective/essential question.

A unit is instruction that provides in-depth experiences in one or more disciplines and continues for a week or more. The unit is a series of related lessons on core curriculum objectives/essential questions and generally concludes with a culminating activity.

1. Complete all parts of the identifying information. The objective(s) from the Richland One Core Curriculum must be stated.
2. Write an overview that summarizes the major points of the lesson/unit.
3. Write the focus/essential question(s) of the lesson/unit that: specifies why the lesson is being taught; and specifies what the teacher expects students to learn.
4. Indicate the approximate time frame in hours/days required to effectively teach the lesson/unit.
5. Identify the specific instructional resources/materials that are appropriate to teach the lesson/unit. Include: title, publisher, copyright date, Internet address, etc.
  • Print material (books, periodicals)

  • Media (film, models, realia)

  • Manipulatives Electronic (CD Rom, laser disc, computer software)

  • Internet connections

  • Telecommunications

  • Community

6. Indicate the culminating assessment that will be used to assess the student's knowledge of the objective, including:
  • definition of the product/performance that students are expected to complete; and
  • criteria that the teacher will use to know if students can answer the essential question(s).
7. Describe the instructional activities and on-going assessment that are appropriate to teach the lesson/unit and assess the learning. Write the activities in the sequence they should be taught specifying the methods, techniques, strategies, assignments, or assessments used by the teacher to actively involve students in the learning process. (High school teachers must include elements of the High Achievement Model.)

Put an X in the box and attach a print-ready copy of the material. Include a bibliography if necessary to meet copyright laws.

9. Submit the completed Curriculum Connections form to Curriculum Services, Waverley -682. If the lesson/unit is computer-generated on a separate sheet, the identifying information (# 1) on the form must be completed, the lesson/unit must be inserted in the form and the form must be signed (#9) by all teachers who worked on the lesson/unit.
