Begin your college exploration process by listing on paper your abilities, limitations, interests and needs. List, also, answers to the questions about the types of colleges that would best meet those needs and interests.
Work with your counselor in the exploration of careers and required education or training after high school. Interview and observe people in career fields you like most.
Explore with your counselor the options of testing to help you discover the special skills and potential abilities you may have, to help you identify possible careers, and to help place you into appropriate courses for your level of achievement.
If you might be college bound,. take the PSAT. This exam, a preliminary. to the SAT, also serves as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Attend an Educational Opportunity Program, the traditional college day or night program at your high school. Do not miss it! This is an exploration time - investigate new possibilities - do not rule out any options. Ask questions of the college representatives and complete interest cards so that more information might be sent to you.

Meet with your guidance counselor. This time, discuss colleges in general. Try to come up with an initial list of schools for further investigation.
Begin writing colleges for general information and/ or catalogs. As you receive brochures, pamphlets, letters, and catalogs, compare and contrast similarities and differences in curricula, cost, admission requirements, and financial aid opportunities. Chart your findings for easy reference.
Make initial visits to the schools of interest.
In March or May, take the SAT and request that the scores be forwarded to at least three colleges.
In May or June, take Achievement Test(s), if appropriate.

Admissions officers generally are open five days a week and frequently offer daily tours. Most offices require appointments for tours and interviews. Check the literature for appropriate telephone numbers and directions.
