Helping Your Child Become A Lifelong Reader

  • Begin early. Even before birth is great!
  • Read aloud to your child every day. If you can't read, look at the pictures and tell your child a story about them.
  • Take your child to the library or bookmobile often.
  • Read the same story or nursery rhyme over and over again. Children learn from repetition.
  • Talk about what you see on the page. Point out colors, letters, or things you see in the picture, such as a tree, dog and clouds.
  • Ask your child questions, such as "What's this?" Ask your child to guess what will happen next.
  • Encourage your child to look for words wherever you are. Look at signs, labels on cans, magazines and television.
  • Be sure your child sees you reading.
  • Don't let your child spend too much time watching television. No more than two hours a day. Television wires the brain differently and can make learning to read difficult.
