Helping
Your Child Become A Lifelong Reader |
| |
-
Begin
early. Even before birth is great!
-
Read
aloud to your child every day. If you can't
read, look at the pictures and tell your
child a story about them.
-
Take
your child to the library or bookmobile
often.
-
Read
the same story or nursery rhyme over and
over again. Children learn from repetition.
-
Talk
about what you see on the page. Point out
colors, letters, or things you see in the
picture, such as a tree, dog and clouds.
-
Ask
your child questions, such as "What's
this?" Ask your child to guess what
will happen next.
-
Encourage
your child to look for words wherever you
are. Look at signs, labels on cans, magazines
and television.
-
Be
sure your child sees you reading.
-
Don't
let your child spend too much time watching
television. No more than two hours a day.
Television wires the brain differently
and can make learning to read difficult.
