medical providers for referred students and follows up with students

Description:
Provide community awareness activities and brochures to children, parents,
teacher, etc. on abuse and prevention. Parent packets include: information
on nurturing children, guide for "keeping your cool", and tips
for positively disciplining children. Agency also provides an annual
professional conference in September. Video conferences on abuse topics
are provided for a nominal fee throughout the year. April is Child Abuse
Prevention month and this agency provides numerous activities in the
schools and in the community during this month.
Availability may vary. Some programs may require referral from the Department
of Social Services.

family is experiencing divorce. Parenting 101- and informative and supportive
group that provides a practical approach to parent-child relations. Separation

Provides a support network for families who have children with special
needs or disabilities. Services include: parent to parent connections,
linkages to community resources and educational and support programs.
Family Partners
Trained parent paraprofessionals help families whose child or children
have developmental delays and are eligible for services through BabyNet
(South Carolina's Early Intervention program for infants and toddlers
up to age three). The Family Partner contact is 1-800-578-8750. BabyNet

They also offer a number of activities that can make a real difference
in enhancing the lives of families. Some of these programs include:

FIRST
STEPS
Description of the program: Richland County Firststeps is a comprehensive,
results-oriented countywide education initiative to help prepare our
children to
reach first grade healthy and ready to succeed. First Steps is "gap
filler" based
upon the unmet school readiness needs.
How it helps our students and/or families: Richland County will address
community
needs by:
- Creating
community centers to reach children in
the four targeted attendance zones.
- Help
parents pay for quality child care
by offering up to $200,000 in
"scholarships" for those who need financial help and have exhausted other means
of support.
- Make "incentive
grants" to childcare workers who
seek training and certification
related to school readiness and
brain development and also to child-care
centers
seeking to meet higher standards.
- Train
child-care providers and parents
on age appropriate behaviors and
health and nutrition
needs.
Who
qualifies for the service: All children
in Richland County, but especially those
in the four elementary school attendance zones where the lowest percentage
of
children test ready to school. These zones are located in Downtown, Central,
Lower
Richland and Northeast areas.
Description: This program provides support, family literacy, and child
development
information to parents with children ages 0-5. Trained parents conduct
hospital
visit in the maternity ward and follow up in the home. Please refer to
your school
social worker for a referral.
