Description:
Provide community awareness activities and brochures to children, parents, teacher, etc. on abuse and prevention. Parent packets include: information on nurturing children, guide for "keeping your cool", and tips for positively disciplining children. Agency also provides an annual professional conference in September. Video conferences on abuse topics are provided for a nominal fee throughout the year. April is Child Abuse Prevention month and this agency provides numerous activities in the schools and in the community during this month.

Availability may vary. Some programs may require referral from the Department of Social Services.

  • Parents Anonymous (PA)
    Support group for parents who may feel overwhelmed by parenting responsibilities.
  • Baby Basics
    Home-based visitation programs that offers free support and information for first time parents. Support can begin in the 3rd trimester and continue through the first six months after birth.
  • Parent Education/Parent Support (PEPS)
    Classes for parents. Classes meet once a week for twelve weeks, covering topics such as anger management, positive parenting, building self-esteem in children and healthy discipline approaches.
  • Parent Aide Services
    Provides home visitation to parents who need intensive support. Para- professionals visit participating families weekly and are on call around the clock for crisis.

Provides a support network for families who have children with special needs or disabilities. Services include: parent to parent connections, linkages to community resources and educational and support programs. 

Family Partners
Trained parent paraprofessionals help families whose child or children have developmental delays and are eligible for services through BabyNet (South Carolina's Early Intervention program for infants and toddlers up to age three). The Family Partner contact is 1-800-578-8750. BabyNet can be reached at 1-800-922-1107.

They also offer a number of activities that can make a real difference in enhancing the lives of families. Some of these programs include:

  • Family Respite Cooperatives: volunteer program to give parents a break from in home care.

FIRST STEPS

Description of the program: Richland County Firststeps is a comprehensive, 
results-oriented countywide education initiative to help prepare our children to 
reach first grade healthy and ready to succeed. First Steps is "gap filler" based 
upon the unmet school readiness needs.

How it helps our students and/or families: Richland County will address community 
needs by:

  • Creating community centers to reach children in the four targeted attendance zones.
  • Help parents pay for quality child care by offering up to $200,000 in 
    "scholarships" for those who need financial help and have exhausted other means of support.
  • Make "incentive grants" to childcare workers who seek training and certification 
    related to school readiness and brain development and also to child-care centers 
    seeking to meet higher standards.
  • Train child-care providers and parents on age appropriate behaviors and health and nutrition needs.

Who qualifies for the service: All children in Richland County, but especially those 
in the four elementary school attendance zones where the lowest percentage of 
children test ready to school. These zones are located in Downtown, Central, Lower 
Richland and Northeast areas.

Description: This program provides support, family literacy, and child development 
information to parents with children ages 0-5. Trained parents conduct hospital 
visit in the maternity ward and follow up in the home. Please refer to your school 
social worker for a referral.

  • School Zone Checks (investigations and research if needed)
  • Informs parents/guardians of items required via Board Policy or State Law for 
    registration in Richland One Schools
  • Works with families to acquire missing items (if needed) such as Birth 
    Certificates, Social Security Cards, or previous school records.
  • Works with students who are placed here in Richland One via International Agencies.
  • Assists the Coordinator of International Programs in the assigning of students who 
    need ESL (English as a Second Language) Program.
  • Assists parents, guardians, and/or agencies who request a change in school 
    assignments based on the student transfer policy of the School Board.
  • Assists adults seeking guardianship of children who have been placed in their home by and agency or by relationship due to " Absent Parents." This includes parents who are deceased, incarcerated, away in the military, hospitalized, or simply have abandoned the student(s).
  • Helps to establish " Proof of Residence" for the growing number of families who 
    have found it necessary to move into temporary housing with friends, relatives of 
    shelters.
  • These offices processes Out-of-District Releases for families who continue to 
    reside in Richland One but want to attend a neighboring districts school. These 
    families could be employees of the other district. Or, these families could be those 
    with other needs such as childcare, medical needs, or other hardships.
  • This office also processes Out-of-District Acceptances of families who continue to 
    live in other districts and request admission to Richland One. These families could 
    be in the process of buying/building a home in Richland One. Or, these families 
    could be those with other needs such as childcare, medical needs, or other hardships.
