guidance counselor can be a valuable source for support, consultation, and referral.

Programs offered for children in special circumstances at Palmetto Health Alliance. (Programs are generally free of change.)

  • Good Grieving for Children - (296-5879)
    Helping Children and Teens cope with loss and death. Support activities for children, teens and their families include the following services: individual packet of materials mailed to families upon request, telephone consultation, referral to community services, quarterly parent education programs, quarterly Good Grieving programs.

    Quarterly parent education programs offered the week prior to Good Grieving program. (See Good Grieving for Adult Caregivers)

  • Quest - (296-3000)
    This program is for children and teens whose parent or grandparent has cancer. Children will learn about: kinds of cancer; understand ways to treat cancer; get "hands on" experience of what it's like to be a patient; share with other children and teens; tour treatment areas; learn about lab tests and see a test being done. (5-16)
    Program is held twice a year. 5:30-8:00pm. Registration is required. A light supper is provided. Wear casual, comfortable clothes.
    Consent form is sent with confirmation letter.

  • Kids Klass - (296-2273)
    Kids Class is held the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 6:30pm to 8:00pm in the 4 East Classroom. It is for children from 4-8 years of age. (No exceptions). Adults must stay with child. Film does show real delivery (on a 4yr old development level). No charge. Outline includes: how to hold & diaper babies, tour of newborn nursery, receive certificate, coloring book, sticker, and refreshments.

  • Good Grieving for the Adult Caregiver
    A one hour program for adults who are caring for grieving children, offering ways to support the child. No registration required.

THE NURTURING CENTER

Services Provided
Center-based indicated for at-risk for child abuse; at least one child who is 6weeks to 5 years of age; resides in the Midlands of SC; parents have the ability to consistently attend and benefit; and parents or caregivers are free of chemical dependency or are participating in a treatment program.

How long is a session? 12 weeks (3 days per week)

Cost to Participant: Free

Therapeutic Programs Offered:

  • Home-Based Services: This includes initial visits, comprehensive assessments, appropriate counseling, and parenting support. Offered before and during center-based services.

  • Individual Family Service Plan: Individualized plans to help with parenting and parent-child interaction are developed with each family based upon their strengths and identified needs.

  • Center-Based Services for Children and Parents: Families come to the Nurturing Center on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and receive services such as structured parenting skills, a therapeutic program for children, supervised parent-child interactions, lunch and transportation. Families initially commit to center-based services three days/week for at least 8 weeks.

  • Case Management and Interagency Collaboration: The Nurturing Center provides a setting for interagency case coordination, collaborative staffing and facilitation of interagency communication enabling all disciplines such as medicine, psychology, law and social work to work together for the benefit of the family.

  • Follow-Up Services: An on-going follow-up service includes support groups, referrals, family fun afternoons and home visits.

  • The Teen Parenting Program: The Teen Parenting program meets Friday morning and afternoon. Students from local high schools participate in sessions that involve group time for both teens and their children.

PREVENT CHILD ABUSE SOUTH CAROLINA (PCASC)

1-800- CHILDREN- Nationwide toll-free line offering support to parents and information/referrals to parents and professionals

Description:
Provide community awareness activities and brochures to children, parents, teacher, etc. on abuse and prevention. Parent packets include: information on nurturing children, guide for "keeping your cool", and tips for positively disciplining children. Agency also provides an annual professional conference in September. Video conferences on abuse topics are provided for a nominal fee throughout the year. April is Child Abuse Prevention month and this agency provides numerous activities in the schools and in the community during this month.

Availability may vary. Some programs may require referral from the Department of Social Services.

Nurturing Parent Facilitator Program: group and home-based Nurturing Programs.

  • Parents Anonymous (PA)
    Support group for parents who may feel overwhelmed by parenting responsibilities.
  • Baby Basics
    Home-based visitation programs that offers free support and information for first time parents. Support can begin in the 3rd trimester and continue through the first six months after birth.
  • Parent Education/Parent Support (PEPS)
    Classes for parents. Classes meet once a week for twelve weeks, covering topics such as anger management, positive parenting, building self-esteem in children and healthy discipline approaches.
  • Parent Aide Services
    Provides home visitation to parents who need intensive support. Para- professionals visit participating families weekly and are on call around the clock for crisis.

Provides a support network for families who have children with special needs or disabilities. Services include: parent to parent connections, linkages to community resources and educational and support programs. 

Family Partners
Trained parent paraprofessionals help families whose child or children have developmental delays and are eligible for services through BabyNet (South Carolina's Early Intervention program for infants and toddlers up to age three). They also offer a number of activities that can make a real difference in enhancing the lives of families. Some of these programs include:

  • Family Respite Cooperatives: volunteer program to give parents a break from in home care.
