NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH WEEK
Richland One will kick off its annual celebration of National School Lunch Week (October 9-13) by encouraging students to combine two important life lessons: eat healthy and exercise.
From 8:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 10, a Zumbando instructor will teach students, faculty and staff at Arden Elementary School how to master these new Latin dance fitness moves. Arden is located at 1300 Ashley St. (North Main Street area)
SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
The Richland One Board of School Commissioners will hold its next regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 10 in Room 102 of the Stevenson Administration Building, 1616 Richland St. Meeting agendas are posted online at www.richlandone.org; click on the School Board link.
SPECIAL RECOGNITION
The State Board of Education will recognize an outstanding Richland One teacher and an outstanding school-business partner during its meeting at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 11 in the basement conference room of the Rutledge Building, 1429 Senate St.
International Paper is being honored as a 2006 recipient of the prestigious Silver Volunteer Award, an honor that goes to a select number of organizations that demonstrate a commitment to excellence in public education. International Paper has donated tens of thousands of dollars and countless hours of volunteer service to Webber Elementary School over the past 15 years.
The State Board also will recognize Brennen Elementary teacher Julie Macker, who selected by the U.S. Department of Education as a 2006 No Child Left Behind American Star of Teaching. Ms. Macker is also a National Deaf Education Master Teacher and a National Deaf Education Cyber Mentor.
LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL!
Recent news headlines across the country re-emphasize the need to ensure that children are engaged in safe and productive activities at all times, including and especially after school hours.
Richland One will spotlight its after-school programs as part of the fourth annual statewide “Lights On After-School!” observance on Thursday, October 12. A brief news conference will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Stevenson Administration Building, 1616 Richland St. Following the news conference, school board members and district staff will visit the after-school programs at Satchel Ford, Columbia High, Riverbanks Zoo and EdVenture Children’s Museum. The media are invited to participate in the tour. The tour bus will leave from the district office at 2 p.m.
And at 6 p.m., Richland One will be honored by the S.C. After-School Alliance as one of its 2006 Champions of After-School, in recognition of the district’s commitment to and support of after-school programs. The private reception will be held at EdVenture, 211 Gervais St.
