Schools to Observe 9/11 Anniversary
Some Richland One schools and classes are planning special activities and lessons to commemorate the fifth-anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Social studies teacher Johnny Bartley’s students at Gibbes Middle School will hold a 9/11 tribute from 1:40-2:30 p.m. Monday, September 11 in the school cafeteria. The students will share their reflections on the tragedy. The students also will share poems and essays they have written and artwork they have created. Gibbes Middle School is located at 3602 Thurmond Street.
Students to Honor Grandparents
Richland One students will show their appreciation and love for their elders next week during their observance of Grandparents Day. National Grandparents Day is designated as the first Sunday after Labor Day. Activities planned include:
Monday, September 11
> Hopkins Middle School has invited the grandparents of its students to enjoy a morning that includes breakfast, followed by a special program that includes a guitar instrumental and student poetry reading. The Hopkins Eagles Choir will entertain the seniors with their rendition of the song "Hero." Grandparents Day events at Hopkins Middle will be held from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Hopkins Middle School is located at 1601 Clarkson Road in Hopkins.
> Logan Elementary has a delicious lunch planned for the grandparents of its students. The seniors have been invited to share a meal with their grandchildren. After lunch, students will give their grandparents gift bags and probably a few hugs as well. Lunch is held from 10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. Logan’s address is 815 Elmwood Avenue.
Thursday, September 14
> John P. Thomas Elementary is inviting grandparents to a special Books & Breakfast workshop. Complimentary breakfast will be served from 8:30-10:30 a.m. in the Tiger Town Café. John P. Thomas is located at 6001 Weston Avenue.
Friday, September 15
> Students at Arden Elementary School will observe the United Day of Caring by making greeting cards to send to the elderly. Arden is located at 1300 Ashley Street.
School Board to Meet Tuesday
The Richland One Board of School Commissioners will hold its next regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, September 12 at the Stevenson Administration Building, 1616 Richland Street. Open session begins at 7 p.m.

Burnside Promoting Health and Wellness
Burnside Elementary invites the community to its Health Awareness Fest on Thursday, September 14, from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Booths will be set up throughout the school offering free health screenings, such as hearing and sickle cell tests. Citizens can get information on a variety of topics including school safety, asthma and chiropractic care. Plus, there will be food and entertainment. Burnside is located at 7300 Patterson Road.
