Disabled Richland One Students Excel in Program
Richland One students with dyslexia, physical handicaps, blindness and other learning disabilities are excelling academically thanks to a partnership with Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, a nonprofit group that provides recorded textbooks and other services for disabled students.

A news conference outlining the success of the program, plans for the future and its impact in the district will be held on Wednesday, September 5, at 10:30 a.m. at Alcorn Middle School, 5125 Fairfield Road. A panel including State Superintendent of Education Dr. Jim Rex and Richland One Superintendent Dr. Allen Coles will share their views on services for disabled students.

Richland One Celebrates Success of After-School Programs
Think after-school programs aren’t important? Just ask any working parent, law enforcement officer or educator and you’ll get an earful about how vital they are to the success and safety of children in our community.

On Wednesday, September 5 Richland One will celebrate the success of its afterschool programs which serve thousands of students every day. A special convocation will be held at 4:30 p.m. at Gibbes Middle School auditorium, 500 Summerlea Drive.

Hundreds of students, parents, teachers and supporters will be on hand to cheer on State Superintendent Dr. Jim Rex, Columbia Mayor Bob Coble and Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott as they talk about the impact of afterschool programs and the challenges unsupervised children encounter. The highlight of the evening includes naming the 10 winners of the 2007 Great Friend of Afterschool Award, which is presented to individuals, businesses and organizations that have been outstanding supporters of Richland One afterschool programs.
