Dedication Ceremony for New Gibbes Middle School
The community is invited to celebrate the completion and opening of the new Gibbes Middle School during a special ceremony at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 18. The program will include student musical performances, a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony and tours of the new school. Gibbes Middle School is located at 500 Summerlea Drive.


Satchel Ford Elementary presents School House Rock Live!, Junior Version
School House Rock, the innovative educational cartoons from the 1970’s, is making a revival in a production being staged by students at Satchel Ford Elementary. Students will perform those well-known songs from the series which used catchy lyrics and rock music to address a language art, math, social studies or science problem. Two productions are scheduled for Tuesday, March 20 in the Satchel Ford cafeteria. The first show starts at 12:30 p.m. and the evening show begins at 7:00 p.m. Satchel Ford is located at 5901 Satchel Ford Road.


Noah’s Flood Opera
Students from Eau Claire High School and surrounding elementary schools, in collaboration with the SC Philharmonic Orchestra and Maestro Nicholas Smith, will perform the children’s opera Noye’s Fludde (Noah’s Flood). This charming operatic version of the familiar Bible story of Noah’s Ark was designed for young singers to play the animals that go onto the ark. The opera will combine professional and student musicians in the orchestra, a high school chorus, and college-level soloists and professional singers.

Performances for district fifth-graders will be held on Tuesday, March 20 at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and on Wednesday, March 21 at 9:30 a.m. at the College Place Methodist Church, 4801 Colonial Drive on the Columbia College campus.

Public performances will be held on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:00 p.m. and on Thursday, March 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the same location. Tickets for these two public performances are $5.00 and may be purchased at the door.


Southeast Middle School Presents Sports Page
Here’s a new twist on sports: dance students at Southeast Middle School will perform choreography based on the differences and similarities between the arts and sports. Their performance of “Sports Page” will be held on Thursday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. Visual arts students have also created set pieces that will display student’s art work. Tickets are $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children. Southeast Middle School is located at 731 Horrell Hill Road in Hopkins.


Community Health Fair
Heyward Career and Technology Center invites the community, parents, and students to get a quick health check-up at its annual health fair on Friday, March 23 from 8:45 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. Participants can get free screenings for blood pressure assessments, body fat composition, and sickle cell anemia. Dieticians, nurses, athletic trainers, a chiropractor, and a dentist will be on hand to answer health and nutrition questions. Emergency and medical technicians from the Columbia Fire Department will demonstrate first aid and CPR techniques. Heyward’s culinary arts students will have some wonderful healthy snacks that participants can sample at the end of their visit. Heyward is located at 3560 Lynhaven Drive.


8th Annual Certified Teacher Job Fair
All certified teachers are invited to discover the advantages and rewards of being a Richland One teacher at the district’s 8th Annual Certified Teacher Job Fair. The event will be held on Saturday, March 24 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., at the Olympia Learning Center, 621 Bluff Road. Veteran teachers, young professionals and May college graduates are encouraged to attend. Prospective candidates can meet Richland One teachers, interview with our principals and learn more about the district’s excellent programs and opportunities. Application details are also available on Richland One’s website www.richlandone.org.
