Community Reception for C.A. Johnson’s New Head Football Coach
C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy has a new head football coach and the school is inviting the community to meet him. Jerry P. Jackson, an assistant football coach and driver’s education teacher at C.A. Johnson, will take over the leadership of the Hornets. The reception for Jackson begins at 6 p.m. Monday, March 5 in the school’s media center. C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy is located at 2219 Barhamville Road.


Nationally Renowned Author Visits W.A. Perry Middle School
Sharon M. Draper, the award-winning author of books for young adults, will spend the day at W.A. Perry Middle School on Tuesday, March 6. She will speak with students about her books and the importance of reading. Draper is the 2007 Coretta Scott King Award winner for her book, "Copper Sun," which is set in Charleston during the 1700’s. W. A. Perry is located at 2600 Barhamville Road.


Poet’s Café Meltdown
Poetry rules the night at the Poet’s Café Meltdown being hosted by Columbia High School from 6 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6. The school’s annual poetry event includes a student poetry contest, open mike and art gallery in a coffee house-type atmosphere. Parents and the community are invited to attend and enjoy an evening of powerful words, fun and fellowship. The Meltdown will be held in the cafeteria of Columbia High School, 1701 Westchester Drive.


Community Construction Meeting
The Richland One Office of Facility Services will hold a community meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 in the cafeteria at C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy. The purpose of the meeting is to review plans for school renovations. An overview of the district's new construction projects is posted at www.richlandone.org; click on the Bond Construction link. Foreign Language Week: Students dress in traditional cultural outfits
World cultures will mingle through the halls of Southeast Middle School on Thursday, March 8. Students and faculty dressed in African kente cloth, Roman togas, Japanese kimonos, Scottish kilts, Caribbean scarves or other traditional costumes will celebrate their heritage during Foreign Language Week. Artifacts from various cultures will also be on display at the school. Students are being encouraged to come dressed in the outfits of their native land or of another culture. Richland One is comprised of a richly diverse student body representing more than 40 countries. Southeast Middle is located at 731 Horrell Hill Road in Hopkins.


Student Holiday
Friday, March 9 is a holiday for Richland One students. All district schools will be closed on that date. However, district administrative offices will be open during regular business hours.
