FOCUSING ON CAREERS
Eighth-graders who are trying to figure out what they want to be when they grow up can explore a wide array of career options during Richland One’s annual "Future Focus Career Quest."
This year’s event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 13 at Heyward Career and Technology Center, 3560 Lynhaven Drive (off Pine Belt Road).
More than 2,000 eighth-graders from middle schools throughout the district will participate and have an opportunity to talk with representatives of 16 career clusters, such as health care, law enforcement and business. Agencies and organizations represented will include the S.C. Department of Consumer Affairs, Palmetto Health, the Columbia Police Department, Dick Dyer Toyota and FN Manufacturing.
SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
The Richland One Board of School Commissioners will hold its next regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, February 13 at the Stevenson Administration Building, 1616 Richland St. Open session begins at 7 p.m. Board meeting agendas are posted online at www.richlandone.org; click on the School Board link.
CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY
* Mignon Clyburn, daughter of Congressman James E. Clyburn, will be the guest speaker for Olympia Learning Center’s Black History Month Celebration. The assembly program will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 14 in the Olympia auditorium. Olympia Learning Center is located at 621 Bluff Road.
* WIS-TV anchor Craig Melvin will be speaker for St. Andrews Middle School’s eighth-grade Black History Month program at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 16 in the school’s cafeteria. Melvin attended St. Andrews Middle. The school is located at 1231 Bluefield Road.
GOT MILK?
Miss Columbia Teen 2007 Taylor Hoverman and a dancing "cow" will team up on Friday, February 16 to encourage students at A.C. Moore Elementary to make healthy food choices, including drinking milk. After the assembly at 9:20 a.m., they will eat lunch with the students and serve them milk to drink with their meal. A.C. Moore Elementary is located at 331 Etiwan Avenue (off Rosewood Drive).
A FOND FAREWELL
Before Dreher High School’s theater is demolished this summer, students are giving it a theatrical tribute and send-off like you’ve never seen before! Theater arts students will perform an original play "Our Stage: Much a Show About Something," on Thursday, February 15 and Friday, February 16 to honor all of the performances that have been staged at the theater for the past 52 years. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. both nights and tickets are $5 at the door.
The Dreher theater will be torn down this summer to make way for new construction and renovations at the school. Dreher is located at 701 Adger Road.
‘EXPERIENCE IN RHYTHM’
The high-energy, crowd-pleasing Logan Leopard Steel Band from Logan Elementary School will share the stage with professional performing groups this week.
The South Carolina Multicultural Arts Center, Columbia Music Festival Association and Vibrations Dance Company will present "Experience in Rhythm" by Terrance Henderson on Thursday, February 15 and Friday, February 16 at the Keenan Theatre on Pine Belt Road. Performances will be at 7 p.m. each night. Henderson is a dance teacher at Logan.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for adults and may be purchased at the door.
