Richland One to Observe King Holiday
All Richland One schools and administrative offices will be closed Monday, January 21 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Students and employees will resume their normal schedules on Tuesday, January 22.
Richland One Students to Perform in King Day Celebration
The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is being remembered and honored by the next generation of leaders. Students from two Richland One schools will share the spotlight at the City of Columbia’s 20th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on Monday, January 21, at 4 p.m. at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park and Community Center, 2300 Greene Street.
The event includes a musical selection by the St. Andrews Middle School Chorus. Eighth-grade student Myshakia Middleton will lead the audience in singing the National Anthem and Tyberius Garner, a W. A. Perry Middle School student, will recite an excerpt from Dr. King’s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. The W. A. Perry Civil Air Patrol also has planned a special military presentation to honor the slain civil rights leader.
Earlier this month, students from eight Richland One schools and the staff of the district’s Student Nutrition Services department collected barrels of nonperishable food that were donated to the Harvest Hope Food Bank in Dr. King’s honor. The total amount collected by Richland One and other community groups will be announced at the celebration.
Other guests scheduled to appear at the celebration include State Superintendent of Education Dr. Jim Rex and Columbia Mayor Bob Coble.
Board of School Commissioners to Meet
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Richland One Board of School Commissioners will be held on Tuesday, January 22 at 7 p.m. at Satchel Ford Elementary, 5901 Satchel Ford Road. Board meeting agendas will be posted on the district’s Web site at www.richlandone.org ; click on the School Board link.
