SENIOR TO FULFILL PROMISE MADE TO HIS LATE
MOTHER
Raheem Bethel lost both of his parents
to long-term illnesses in the span of a year.
Despite this double-tragedy, he persevered
and stayed focused on his education. And, on
May 23, he will fulfill a promise he made to
his late mother. Raheem will be among the 98
students who will receive their high-school
diplomas from Richland One’s C.A. Johnson
Preparatory Academy next week.
C.A. Johnson’s graduation will be held
at 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Carolina Coliseum.
MIDDLE COLLEGE CHARTER SCHOOL TO GRADUATE
ITS FIRST CLASS
The Richland One Middle College
at Midlands Technical College, a charter school
operated in partnership between Richland School
District One and Midlands Tech, will graduate
its first class on Thursday, May 25.
Middle College students learn in a collegiate
environment, participate in paid internships
and get a head start in earning college course
credits. The Middle College currently serves
students in the 11th and 12th grades. Forty-one
students will graduate this year. The graduation
ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. at The Koger
Center for the Arts.

RICHLAND ONE STUDENTS PREPARE FOR SUMMER JOURNEY
TO AFRICA
When school dismisses for the year
Tuesday, ten Richland One middle-school students
will head home to start packing their bags
for their journey to the African continent.
The students, all seventh-graders, are participating
in the Richland One Student Experience to Africa
(ROSETA) program. They will spend nearly two
weeks in Ghana, West Africa, visiting schools
and various sites of cultural, political and
historical significance. Along with their chaperones,
the middle-schoolers will depart for Ghana
on June 1 and return to Columbia on June 14.
DISTRICT CHOSEN AS PILOT SITE FOR SUMMER ONLINE
COURSES
Richland One has been identified as a primary
participant in the South Carolina Virtual School
Pilot being implemented by the State Department
of Education. This exciting learning opportunity
is a part of the state’s overall e-Learning
professional development program and the current
legislative efforts to establish guidelines
for virtual schools.
The district will offer two exciting elective
courses this summer - Web design and global
studies. Both courses are open to high-school
students and are limited to ten students each.
Richland One students will be given first preference
for enrollment. The registration deadline is
May 31.
