THIS WEEK IN RICHLAND ONE

Richland One Cares

Richland One will launch a district-wide relief effort Monday to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina. The drive, called "Richland One Cares," is being organized by staff at the Stevenson Administration Building. A trailer will be set up in the back parking lot of the building (Pickens Street side), and volunteers will be on hand to receive donated items from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. each day Monday, Sept. 19 through Friday, Sept. 23.

What About the Children?

The South Kilbourne Singers, students, faculty and staff at South Kilbourne Elementary School are sponsoring a "What About the Children?" hurricane relief fund drive. They are trying to fill an entire wall in the cafeteria with pledge cards, as well as collecting canned goods, diapers, socks and underwear. The relief effort will conclude with a school-wide "What About the Children?" concert from 1:30-2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30.

International Day of Peace

Students at Brockman Elementary School will observe International Day of Peace on Wednesday, Sept. 21, as part of the Montessori philosophy of learning. Brockman is a Montessori school. The International Peace Day ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. on the school’s playground. The recipient of this year’s Brockman Peace Dove Award will be recognized during the ceremony.

Meet the Superintendent

The Richland One Board of School Commissioners invites parents and community members to meet the district’s new superintendent, Dr. Allen Coles. The “Meet and Greet” will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Logan Elementary School, 815 Elmwood Ave. Coles, who came to Columbia from the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, began his duties in Richland One on July 1.

Get Caught Reading

A.C. Flora High School has launched "Get Caught Reading," an incentive component of its school-wide sustained silent reading program, Flora Reads. Students and teachers spend ten minutes at the beginning or at the end of each class period reading self-selected material. A cadre of school personnel (non-teaching staff) goes "on the prowl for readers." When classes are "caught reading," the students are rewarded with small trinkets. At the end of each quarter, the classes caught reading during the quarter will be eligible to participate in a drawing for another reward. Classes may have multiple entries for the quarterly drawings.

"Get Caught Reading" kicked off the week of Sept. 12 and will continue throughout the school year.
