Tuesday, Sept. 13
Kwame Jackson, runner-up on the NBC reality show "The Apprentice," will be the keynote speaker for the morning session of the "Removing Barriers from Student Learning" conference for school-based support staff professionals from throughout the Southeast. Jackson, a Charlotte native, will speak at 8:30 a.m. in the main ballroom of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. The conference is being hosted by Richland One’s Student Support Services Department.
Wednesday, Sept. 14
Students at Crayton Middle School have raised more than $4,700 to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. The money will be presented to a representative from the Red Cross during grade-level school assemblies at 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and noon in the auditorium.
Thursday, Sept. 15
Lower Richland High School will hold its Grandparents Day celebration at 9 a.m. Grandparents of LR students and grandparents living in area senior-care facilities are invited to attend. The LR concert band and chorus will perform, and brunch will be served to the guests of honor.
Friday, Sept. 16
Richland One will hold its annual College & Post-Secondary Education Fair from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carolina Coliseum. Juniors and seniors will be transported to the Coliseum for the event. Parents of all Richland One high-school students are encouraged to attend. More than 150 recruiters from colleges and universities across the country, as well as representatives from all branches of the military, will participate.
Hand Middle School has designated Friday as "When the Saints Go Marchin’ In Day." From 7 to 9 a.m., band students will play the familiar New Orleans tune as cars pull in to the school’s back circle and motorists make contributions to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina. School cheerleaders will be on hand to cheer contributors for making donations.
Saturday, Sept. 17
Richland One will kick off International Literacy Week and mark its 34th anniversary as a multi-site partner with Reading Is Fundamental, during "Reading Rocks With Writers 2005." The literacy celebration will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at W.J. Keenan High School, 3455 Pine Belt Road. Activities will include a literacy parade, featuring Richland One Superintendent Allen Coles and Suzanne Ryan of RIF as grand marshals; guest authors; storytelling; puppet shows; and a celebrity basketball game, with funds being donated to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.
