Richland One Students Named Junior ROTC Honor Cadets
Richland One and Lower Richland High School are proud to announce that three Junior ROTC cadets from Lower Richland High have been named honor cadets.
LR cadets Tia Brown, a rising junior; Kelsey Grochow, a rising sophomore; and Marcie Huguenin, a rising senior, were among the more than 350 cadets from South Carolina and North Carolina schools that participated in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Cadet Leadership Challenge held June 11-16 at McCrady Training Center, Fort Jackson.
The annual summer camp included several tests of the cadets’ abilities and skills, including performing as a team, reading a map, using a compass, rappelling from a 60-foot platform, canoeing, completing a ropes course, drill and marksmanship.
Brown, Grochow and Huguenin appeared before a panel of judges and were among the
10 cadets selected from a total of 382 cadets as honor cadets. The prestigious designation means that those cadets are in the top 3% of their class.
"The cadets and their parents should be very proud," said 1st Sgt. (Ret.) James Hamilton, the LR cadets’ instructor. "Not only did the cadets meet the physical challenges, but they all displayed character, which will take them very far in life. Being selected as honor cadets is a huge accomplishment and an excellent representation of Richland One, Lower Richland High School and the JROTC program."
