Richland One Seventh-Graders Recognized by Duke University

Thirty Richland One seventh-grade students have been recognized for outstanding performance on the ACT or SAT in the 2007 Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP). They are among the top scorers in South Carolina and were officially recognized in a state ceremony held May 29 at Furman University in Greenville.

Crayton Middle School student Charles Cate deserves special praise. Not only did he qualify as a state winner, he also achieved the TIP grand level, an honor given to students with the highest scores on the exams nationwide.

To qualify for the state honor, students taking the ACT had to score 21 or above in English, math, reading or science. If they took the SAT, they had to score 520 or above on math or 510 or above on critical reading. Students scoring 10 points below these levels in both math (510) and science (500) on the SAT also qualified as TIP honorees.

To qualify for the grand level, students taking the ACT must score 28 or above in English or math, 30 or above in reading or 27 or above in science. Those taking the SAT must score 650 or above in either math or critical reading or have a combined score of 1260 or above.

Duke TIP identifies gifted children and provides a whole range of activities and programs to nurture the development of these exceptionally bright youngsters. This past winter more than 75,000 academically talented seventh-graders across the nation took the SAT or ACT alongside the usual group of college-bound 11th- and 12th-graders and earned scores that rivaled or surpassed those earned by older students.
