LR NAMES NEW BOYS’ BASKETBALL COACH

Ezekiel "Zeke" Washington has been named the new head boys’ basketball coach at Lower Richland High School.

Washington, a graduate of Howard University and Benedict College, is coming to Richland One from Chester High School, where he serves as the school’s athletics director and head girls’ basketball coach. He also teaches driver’s education and mathematics at Chester High.

Under his leadership, the Chester High girls’ basketball team won the 2004 Class AAA state championship. Washington also has received several coaching honors, including having been named the Region IV AAA Girls Coach of the Year for three consecutive years.

Prior to his employment at Chester High, Washington taught and coached at Fairfield Central High School, where he led the boys’ basketball team to win the 1998 Class AAA state championship. In 2004, he became one of only a handful of coaches in South Carolina to have won a girls’ basketball state championship and a boys’ basketball state championship.

Washington’s duties in Richland One are effective July 1.
