C.A. JOHNSON SENIOR WINS STEVENSON MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP
Johnnie Grant, a senior at C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy, is the recipient of the 2007 Dr. John R. Stevenson Music Scholarship.
The Partners In Education Foundation annually awards the $1,000 scholarship to a Richland One high-school senior who plans to pursue post-secondary study in music. The scholarship is named in honor of former Richland One superintendent and Superintendent Emeritus Dr. John R. Stevenson. Recipients are selected through an application process.
Grant is a trombonist who has played with the Keenan High Jazz Band, C.A. Johnson High Concert Band, the United House of Prayer Band, the Gene Dykes Big Band and at open mic nights around Columbia. He says his goal is to be "one of the greatest trombone players in the world."
In the fall, Grant plans to attend Allen University or Claflin University to major in music. After college, he would like to tour as a professional musician then teach music.
