Richland One Students Excel in Service and Citizenship

Richland One congratulates its outstanding students who demonstrate community service, leadership and outstanding character. Details of their achievements are listed below.

Gibbes Middle School Student to Meet with Members of Congress
Gibbes Middle School student Jukayla Johnson will go to Washington, DC on April 23 with a very important message to Congress: after-school programs, like those in Richland One, are essential to students’ success and need more funding. The bubbly seventh-grader was recently selected to represent Richland One at the 2007 National Afterschool for All Challenge Conference, which will be held in the nation’s capital. Jukayla participates in the Gibbes after-school program sponsored by the Knight Foundation. At the two-day conference, she will join hundreds of other after-school participants and advocates from around the nation as they attend networking sessions and visit Capitol Hill for meetings with members of Congress.

The Afterschool for All Challenge is sponsored by the Afterschool Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of after school programs and advocating for quality, affordable programs for all children.

Students Win Library Volunteer Awards
Two Richland One students recently were recognized for their outstanding volunteer work at the Richland County Public Library. In March Hopkins Middle School student Keanu Crouch was named the Junior Volunteer of the Year and Lower Richland High School junior Devin Washington won the Teen Volunteer of the Year award. Keanu, who volunteers at the Southeast Regional Branch, has spent more than 80 hours maintaining magazines and pulling books for special library displays. Devin has volunteered more than 62 hours at the library since 2001. He has been an active member of the Teen Advisory Board and was instrumental in redesigning a teen Web site for the library.
