Richland One Seeking Sites to Host Free Summer Lunch Program for Children
Again this summer, Richland One will provide free lunches to any children who need them. In order to serve as many children as possible, the district is seeking sites throughout the community where children can go to get a meal from May 29 through August 10.
Churches, community centers, city and county parks, nonprofit agencies and summer programs that would like to serve as meal sites in the Seamless Summer Program are encouraged to apply by April 30, 2007. Organizations that provide a summer camp or program for children also may be eligible to receive free meals for their participants. Orientation sessions for operators of prospective sites will be held in May. This federally-funded program offers children a nutritious lunch and snack at no cost to parents.
It’s easy to apply. Simply click here to go to the Student Nutrition Services website, download the application, complete it and fax to Richland One Student Nutrition Services at (803) 231-6962 or mail it to Richland One Student and Nutrition Services, 201 Park Street, Columbia, SC 29201.
“We don’t want any children to go hungry this summer because their parents don’t have the money or can’t get home to prepare lunch for them,” said Imogene Clarke, director of Student Nutrition Services.
"The Seamless Summer Program offers any child the opportunity to go to any of the designated sites and ask for a meal. It’s simple and there are no costs or registration forms for parents to worry about," Clarke said. "We are encouraging as many organizations as possible to take advantage of this great opportunity."
Richland One had over 100 summer lunch program sites last summer. The list of this year’s sites will be published as soon as it is finalized.
Organizations that wish to apply to serve as a site in the 2007 Seamless Summer Program can contact the Richland One Office of Student Nutrition Services at 231-6953. Questions from the media should be directed to the Richland One Office of Communications at 231-7510 or 231-7504.
