Russian Teachers Visiting Richland One Schools

Seven Russian teachers and a principal from schools in Kaluga, Russia are visiting Richland One high schools this week. Their visit is in conjunction with an international educational project called Deliberating in Democracy. This new pilot project brings American and Russian high schools together to discuss democratic principles and hot political issues. Richland One is one of a handful of school districts in the nation participating in this program, which includes a teacher exchange program and international videoconferences by students and teachers in both countries.

While in Columbia our Russian visitors will be treated to a traditional Southern breakfast where they could get their first taste of grits and other local favorites (March 13, 7:30 - 9:30 a.m., Columbia High School). The majority of their time will be spent at Richland One high schools learning about our educational programs. Their visit also includes a meeting at the State House to discuss state government operations with several senators (March 15, 10 a.m. - 12 noon) and an International Children’s Day event at A.C. Flora High School (March 16, 9:15 - 10:30 a.m.). But there will be some time for fun and relaxation including sight-seeing at the State Museum and the Children’s Museum (March 16, 11:00 a.m.).

Members of the media interested in covering specific events or who need more details about the Russian teachers’ itinerary should contact the Richland One Office of Communications at 231-7504 or 231-7510.
