C.A, JOHNSON PREPARATORY ACADEMY PARTICIPATES IN THE 20TH ANNUAL BLACK HISTORY TELECONFERENCE

Twenty-six (26) CAJPA seniors with their teachers (Ms. Naylene Richardson and Ms. Catherine Smalls) and administrator (Dr. A. Palmer) attended the 20th annual Black History Teleconference at Benedict College on Wednesday, February 14, 2007. All participants attended several workshops related to Black History and Culture featuring renowned authors, educators, musicians and other professionals. The program also featured a musical portion with groups from five Richland One high schools and the Benedict Gospel Choir. Jonathan R. Jones, student leader and honor student, represented CAJPA as part of the student panelist during the televised one hour and a half broadcast. The telecast will be viewed over 345 stations world-wide including 177 foreign stations on Feb. 16, 2007 at 10:00 am - 11:30 am on channel 305. Most of the CAJPA students said that they were inspired and motivated to seek for excellence, tempered with the knowledge that they appreciated learning more about African-American History.


Health Career Students Participates in South Carolina’s AHEC Health Summit

Three C. A. Johnson Preparatory Academy Health Career Club students (Krystal Cosby, Roosevelt Dunlap, and Kenneth Myers) participated in the annual Health Summit, “Promoting Diversity in Health Care” held on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at the William Yates Conference Center (Columbia, SC). These students participated in several work sessions and were motivated in the lunch workshop by the keynote speaker: Michal Wynn, author and educational consultant from Rising Sun Publishing (Atlanta, Ga.). All students and professionals from the four (4) regional coalitions of the South Carolina AHEC were in attendance. The purpose of this conference was to strengthen SC health care workforce and close the health disparities gap by increasing the number of underrepresented minority health care professional. One CAJPA student, Roosevelt Dunlap spoke at the conference to relate his working experiences with medical doctors in the summer of 2005, an opportunity he hopes that will lead to additional employment in the health field in the future. Dr. Palmer, Academic Dean and a parent, Mrs. Emma Myers (consultant) also represented CAJPA at this conference. This summit was sponsored by the South Carolina Area Health Education Consortium. The Health Careers club at CAJPA is actively involved in recruiting students to
participate in health careers opportunities and help sponsor many projects such as:


* School Breakfast Week (March 5-9)
* Relay for Life (May 18)
* CAJPA Health Fair ((1st week of May)


CAJPA Students Attends 2007 High School Leadership Conference

On Tuesday, March 6, 2007 seventeen (17) C. A. Johnson Preparatory Academy student leaders attended the 2007 High School Leadership Conference in the Madren Conference Center at Clemson University. The students involved were 9th grade through 12th grade student leaders who participated in several workshops at the conference "Leadership: Get in the Game". These students and their advisors: Dr. Palmer and Mrs. Baxter-Bennon received valuable information on defining styles of leadership and applying the principles of leadership in their school setting. Stephen Gosnell, Clemson University Student Body President was the closing keynote speaker and challenged all participants to know the rules in the leadership game so they can strengthen and enhance their leadership skills.


C. A. Johnson Student Body President, Leah-Marie Sullivan and Dr. Palmer, Student Council advisor will conduct a follow-up session, which will allow students to share the information they gained from the conference to perpetuate effective strategies and individual passions to complete several reforms planned for this school year. The student leaders will discuss their findings and strategies with Mrs. Greer, Principal Specialist at CAJPA, for input from the administration. The number one priority of the student leaders is to develop plans to help C. A. Johnson implement its A+ Project strategies which will help the school in designing and successfully meeting its 2007 Report Card improvement goals.
