Richland One’s ‘Arts Advantage 2007’: Schedule of Events
There’s something for everyone at Richland One’s "Arts Advantage 2007" extravaganza. This month-long celebration of the arts and its contributions to education include a children’s opera, Shakespeare’s classics, old favorites like Peter Pan and African drum and dance performances. There’s even a dance competition based on the hit TV show "Dancing with the Stars." But that’s not all. There are performances that celebrate the contributions of different segments of society, from women’s issues to sports. There’s poetry, creative writing, musicals, plays, band concerts, art exhibits and much, much more. And let’s not forget productions with special invited guests like the Hampton University Concert Choir and Maestro Nicholas Smith, the conductor of SC Philharmonic Orchestra. It’s truly an arts explosion.
Richland One invites the community to come out and enjoy these wonderful events that will be staged at schools throughout the district. FESTIVAL FINALE:
National Anthem Project: Restoring America’s Voice
March 30, 9:50 AM, district-wide, all classrooms and media centers
Richland One students, teachers and administrators join together in singing "The Star Spangled Banner." Richland One joins the roster of national organizations and top corporations who are partners in the National Anthem Project Campaign, the mission of which is to raise awareness of the importance of music education in preserving American musical traditions. A recent Harris poll found that 70 percent of Americans who know "The Star Spangled Banner" learned it in their school music classes. The same poll found that almost two-thirds of Americans don’t know the National Anthem, despite its being ever-present at sporting events and other national celebrations. The National Association for Music Education provides resources for teachers to teach the history, social studies, vocabulary, singing techniques and musical skills in fun and interesting ways at www.thenationalanthemproject.org.
