Richland One Schools to Celebrate Read Across America

You know them-the Cat in the Hat, the Brown Cow, Horton, the Grinch. We all have our favorite characters from the books of Dr. Seuss. The works of the beloved author continue to inspire generations of children to read. How fitting that the Read Across America project will be celebrated on his birthday, March 2, and throughout the month in Richland One and schools across the nation. Read Across America is a national program that encourages children and adults to become great readers.

Several Richland One schools will be celebrating this annual event. Details are listed below.

March 1, Alcorn Middle School
Alcorn Middle School students in the extended-day program have a full afternoon of activities planned for March 1. In addition to reading books by Dr. Seuss, 125 students sporting stovepipe hats will get involved in designing newsletters, "wanted" posters, and cartoon strips to illustrate one of his books. Some will get the opportunity to "rewrite" a Dr. Seuss book using their own hip-hop slang or write a commercial about one of his books. The fun begins at 4 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Alcorn is located at 5125 Fairfield Road.

March 2, St. Andrews Middle School
To honor Dr. Seuss and celebrate the fun and value of reading, hundreds of St. Andrews Middle School teachers and students will rock and read non-stop from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during a "Rocking Read-a-thon." About a dozen or so rocking chairs will be placed in the school’s media center which has been decorated with themes and characters from Dr. Seuss books. Every 15 minutes, new teams of readers will take their turn to sit in the chairs and rock while they read their favorite books.

Think you’re up on your Dr. Seuss book trivia? Students will compete for prizes as they match wits in correctly identifying quotes from popular Dr. Seuss books. St. Andrews Middle is located at 1231 Bluefield Road.

March 2, Pendergrass Fairwold School
Pendergrass Fairwold has two events planned to honor Dr. Seuss. At 9:30 a.m. on Friday, March 2 students will be treated to the televised reading of "If I Ran a Rain Forest."

But on Friday, March 16 Fairwold pulls out all the stops with a special appearance by the Cat in the Hat himself and a variety of guest readers. Everyone will be dressed in appropriate Cat in the Hat attire which includes stovepipe red and white striped hats and bowties. The students made extras for visitors and parents. A medley of songs from Dr. Seuss books and films will definitely be a show-stopper that morning. There’s even a special menu that day to honor Dr. Seuss based on the titles of his ever-popular books:

  • Hop on Popcorn Chicken (Hop on Pop)

  • 1 Fish 2 Fish (1 Fish 2 Fish Red Fish Blue Fish)

  • ABC Potatoes (ABC An Amazing Alphabet)

  • Grinchy Green Beans (How the Grinch Stole Christmas)|

  • One Apple Up on Top (Ten Apples Up on Top)

The fun and excitement begins at 9:30 a.m. in the school cafeteria. Pendergrass Fairwold School is located at 5935 Token Street.
