Richland One Teachers Fly
To Russia
One April 7, six lucky Richland
One teachers are packing their heavy winter
coats for a Spring Break that will be spent
in Russia. Today at 12:30 p.m. they’re
flying out of Columbia, making a quick stop
in Atlanta and then taking an 11-hour flight
to Moscow. After they land in Moscow, they
can expect a two-hour car drive to Kaluga,
Russia, where they will spend the week observing
Russian schools. Members of the media can speak
with the teachers before their flight. They
will gather at the Delta airline terminal around
11:00 a.m. Friday.
Next week’s forecast for snow in Russia
hasn’t deterred the enthusiasm of these
high school teachers involved in Deliberating
in Democracy, a new pilot project that brings
American and Russian high schools together
to discuss democratic principles. Richland
One is one of only six districts in the nation
that participate in this program. The teacher
exchange program is one of the highlights of
the project. In May, Russian teachers will
visit Richland One.
"We are just thrilled to be going to
Russia," said Jane Eason, Richland One’s
social studies specialist. "Our flight
will take us over the North Pole. This is an
exciting event and we look forward to learning
many valuable lessons about the Russian schools
we’ve been corresponding with for the
last few months."
Richland One extends its best wishes to the
following employees as they leave for Russia.
They represent five of the seven Richland One
high schools participating in Deliberating
in Democracy. Lower Richland High School and
the Olympia Learning Center also are involved
in the project.
