District Wins 41 Awards in
Region II Science & Engineering Fair
Richland One students captured 41awards at
the 49th Annual Region II Science & Engineering
Fair, held at USC. Awards were presented March
20 in ceremonies at the Koger Center.
Our students
swept first, second and third places in the
senior division of physics. They are, respectively:
Cannon Rhame, Dreher; Mary Beth Ward, Dreher;
and Max Blankenship, Dreher. Katelyn Bowie
of Crayton won first place in the junior division.
She also won first place in the junior
division, Most Imaginative Use of a Computer.
The
team of Luis Suarez and Alex Zhang of Dreher
won several awards, including: first
place, senior division, Most Imaginative
Use of a Computer; Intel Excellence in Computer
Science Award; and Eastman Kodak Award for
Outstanding Achievement.
Theodore Gwara of
Hand won second place, junior division,
behavioral and social sciences; William Kana
of Hand won third place, junior division,
civil engineering; Rebecca Chappell of
Crayton won third place, junior division,
health; Eliza Smith of Brennen won Belle
W. Baruch Institute Award, junior division,
and first place junior division, S.C.
Energy Office; Taylor Patterson of St. Andrews
won Columbia Audubon Society Award, senior
division, outstanding achievement; Kevin
Yeh of Dreher won U.S. Navy /Marine Corps
Award for distinguished achievement; and
Woody Horn of Hand won third place, junior
division, S.C. Energy Office.
Lucas Wentworth
of Dreher won second place, Most Imaginative
Use of a Computer, and second place, senior
division, Intel Columbia Design Center Award.
Cannon
Rhame of Dreher won the Herbert Hoover Young
Engineer Award for outstanding achievement.
In
the Association for Women in Science Awards,
the winners were: junior division, general
science, Eliza Smith, Brennen; engineering,
DeAnna Chambers, Hand; team project, Lauren
Teague and Julia Theus, Crayton; senior division,
engineering, Alice Robinson, Dreher; and
senior team project, Rachel Love and Amy
Zhang, Dreher.
Taylor Patterson of St. Andrews
won the Association for Women Geoscientists
Outstanding Junior Achievement Award. Brittany
Flemming of Crayton won USC-Sumter Outstanding
Achievement in
biology, and Katelyn Bowie of Crayton won
USC-Sumter Outstanding Achievement in earth/
physical sciences.
The S.C. Science Council Best Junior Team
Project went to Brionca Dunham, Tchnavia Tucker
and Shanavia Gibson of Webber.
Winners in the
Central S.C. Best 10 Fifth-Grade Projects
were: Marshall Sheorn, Catherine Watson, Sarah
Hipp and Eliza Smith, all of Brennen; and Robert
Lloyd and Giovanni Dwight of Webber. In Best
of Three of 10 Best, first place went to Marshall
Sheorn, and third place went to Catherine Watson.
Alexis
Blair of Crayton was one of Central S.C.
Best 10 Sixth-Grade Projects; Jessica Grant
and Theodore Gwara of Hand were among the Central
S.C. Best 10 Eighth-Grade Projects.
The Best
Fifth-, Sixth- and Eighth-Grade Project Awards
were presented by Dr. Richard Moniuszko, interim
superintendent.
