A.C. Moore Elementary Nurse
Selected As S.C. School Nurse of the Year
Carolyn Duff, RN, the school nurse at AC Moore
Elementary School was selected as the South
Carolina School Nurse (RN) of the Year. Dr.
Cleo Richardson, Deputy State Superintendent
of Education and Angie Olawsky, Associate Director
of Public Health Nursing for SC DHEC, presented
the award to Mrs. Duff at the 25th Annual School
Nurse Conference. The award is presented annually
by the South Carolina Department of Education
and South Carolina Department of Health and
Environmental Control to a registered nurse
practicing as a school nurse, who has made
an outstanding contribution to the specialty
of school nursing.
Mrs. Duff is a nationally certified school
nurse who also has a masters degree from the
Arnold School of Public Health at the University
of South Carolina. She has practiced school
nursing at AC Moore for nine years. AC Moore
is a school with many international students
and many who are uninsured and have limited
access to healthcare. To meet the healthcare
needs of students, Mrs. Duff takes full advantage
of partnerships with community organizations
to assist families with establishment of medical
homes, with the application process for Medicaid,
with accessing preventive and acute healthcare,
vision and dental care, and to provide transportation
to and from appointments for students and parents.
Mrs. Duff has organized and managed an eight-component
Coordinated School Health Program at AC Moore
since 2000.
In addition to working to improve school health
services at the school level, Mrs. Duff is
very involved in professional activities at
the state and national level. She has been
active in South Carolina Association of School
Nurses (SCASN) as long as she has been a school
nurse. She has served as president-elect (1999-2000),
president (2000-2002), newsletter co-editor
(1996-2002), and has chaired many committees.
She developed the SCASN web site and was instrumental
in establishing and continues to coordinate
the SCASN Annual Conference, a continuing education
opportunity for school nurses. Other state
level activities include participation on the
School Nurse Program Advisory Committee lead
jointly by DHEC and the Department of Education
and the School Nurse Task Force at the Board
of Nursing.
Presently, she serves as the SCASN representative
to the Board of Directors of the National Association
of School Nurses (NASN). In her capacity as
State Director, she has been active in advocacy
for school health services and school nursing.
She has authored position statements, issue
briefs and newsletter articles, presented at
conferences, and organized a "Trip to
the Hill" in Washington, D.C., for South
Carolina school nurses. She will serve as State
Director until July, 2008.
