Richland One School Nurse
Wins DHEC Award
Hands down - she’s
a winner! Cheryl Guyton, school nurse at Olympia
Learning Center, recently won the silver medal
in the All-Health Team grant competition sponsored
by the SC Department of Health and Environmental
Control, the Lexington Medical Center and WIS-TV.
She will receive a $3,000 cash award to purchase
materials and equipment for her highly successful
Healthy Hands project, which promotes frequent
hand-washing by students to prevent the spread
of disease and illnesses.
Nurse Guyton’s
Healthy Hands project spread information
throughout the school about the importance
of frequent hand washing. Students did experiments,
wrote research papers and created decorative
soaps and hand lotions to promote the project.
They placed bulletin boards, banners, flyers
and signs throughout the school to encourage
students, faculty and staff to make washing
their hands a priority.
The All-Health Team’s
goal is to promote healthy habits among youth
in South Carolina. The organization recognizes
outstanding school health programs each month
and allows the monthly winners to compete
for grants.
