Groundbreaking Ceremony for
Keenan High School to be Held March 17
Richland School District One will hold groundbreaking
ceremonies for the new W.J. Keenan High School
Thursday, March 17 at 11 a.m. at the new site,
Pisgah Church Road and Wilson Boulevard.
In November 2002, Richland One voters approved
a $381 million bond issue to upgrade the district's
middle schools and high schools. As part of
the bond issue, Keenan will be built as a prototypical
high school facility to support today’s
educational needs, improve safety and security,
and provide students with a high-quality learning
environment.
Keenan opened in 1963 as a junior high school
in the A.C. Flora feeder zone. At the time,
it was the most modern school building in the
state, having the distinction of being the
first air-conditioned school in South Carolina.
Named in honor of William J. Keenan who served
on the school board from 1934-1959, Keenan
became a high school in 1970-71.
The public
is invited to attend the ceremony.
