Richland One Selects Interim Superintendent

The Richland One Board of School Commissioners selected Dr. Richard Moniuszko as interim superintendent at its Jan. 11 meeting. Dr. Moniuszko has served the district as deputy superintendent since July 2000. He will assume the position of interim superintendent on Feb. 1.

"Richland One is one of the premier school systems in the southeast, and I look forward to working with our teachers and staff as interim superintendent. The district has made great progress over the past few years, and I look forward to working with everyone in this new capacity to continue the gains we’re making in student achievement."

As deputy superintendent, Dr. Moniuszko serves as the second highest-ranking administrator in the district, supervising several departments. In addition to his experience as deputy superintendent in Richland One, Dr. Moniuszko served as director of instructional accountability and director of pupil personnel services with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.) Schools. He has worked with school districts in North and South Carolina since 1976, including administrative experience as assistant superintendent and director of special services in Spartanburg.

He earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Virginia, master’s degree from Winthrop University, and Doctor of Education degree from the University of South Carolina. His wife, Linda Moniuszko, currently is principal of Satchel Ford Elementary School in Richland One, and will continue in that capacity while he is interim superintendent; however, the Board’s nepotism policy will require she vacate her position should Dr. Moniuszko seek and be selected as superintendent through the Board’s search process.

The Board rendered its decision at its regular meeting. "We will certainly miss the leadership Dr. Epps has provided the district over the past six years, and we are looking forward to Dr. Moniuszko continuing to build upon the accomplishments of the district’s students and staff as interim superintendent, " stated Jasper Salmond, chairman of the Richland One Board of School Commissioners. "The Board is pleased that Dr. Moniuszko agreed to serve as interim superintendent."
