Lewis Greenview Elementary Wins 2005 Riley Award

A.J. Lewis Greenview Elementary School was named the winner of the 2005 Dick and Tunky Riley Award at the Regional School Improvement Council (SIC) Conference held in Columbia on March 19.

Named for the former governor of South Carolina and his wife, the Dick and Tunky Riley School Improvement Award was created to recognize the significant contributions made to public education by the more than 17,000 SIC members who volunteer in every public school in the state.  Each year a single winner is chosen to receive the award; four additional SICs receive honorable mentions.

Delores Gilliard, principal of Lewis Greenview, accepted the award from Ted Riley, son of the former governor.

The Lewis Greenview SIC developed four areas of focus for its efforts:

  • In its effort to ensure that "no parents are left behind" (NPLB), the School Improvement Council implemented a series of educational workshops and events that provided parents with PACT strategies to better assist their children in the areas of mathematics, reading and science.
  • The Lewis Greenview SIC recognizes that parent involvement is a key to student success and developed programs to address diversity issues and support non-traditional parents. D.A.D.S. (Dads Are Doing Something) promotes father involvement in education and brings men into the school in volunteer roles.  The Grandparent Program addresses the needs of grandparents raising grandchildren and also provides foster grandparent opportunities.
  • A Greenview Community Health Fest was held to address overall health and mental health issues in the community.  Partnerships with the community provided support, services and heightened community awareness of critical health issues.
  • The SIC was instrumental in securing important partnerships with Pepsi, Verizon and Wachovia, and the result was the kick-off of the school’s new High Performance Partnership.

This SIC has embraced all members of its community to bring needed resources to the school door.
