Groundbreaking Ceremony for
Dreher High School To Be Held March 3
Richland School District One will hold groundbreaking
ceremonies for the new Dreher High School Thursday,
March 3 at 11 a.m. at the school site, 701
Adger Rd.
In November 2002, Richland One voters approved
a $381 million bond issue to upgrade the district's
middle schools and high schools. As part of
the bond issue, Dreher will be rebuilt at the
present site with a new prototypical high school
facility to support today’s educational
needs, improve safety and security, and provide
students with a high-quality learning environment.
Having once belonged to General Wade Hampton,
the property on which Dreher now stands was
purchased from Burwell Manning, and on Dec.
21, 1937, the school board awarded the contract
for the construction of the school. In 1938
the new high school was named for Mr. Ernest
S. Dreher, who served as superintendent of
schools from 1895-1918. The size of the building
expanded during 1952-54 with the addition of
a new wing, auditorium, library, shops and
cafeteria additions. The science facility was
completed in 1969-70, and the physical education
building was added in 1971.
The public is invited to attend the ceremony.
