Richland One Names 2004-05 Teacher of the Year and Classified Employee of the Year

Richland One honored the district’s Outstanding Teachers of the Year, Substitute Teacher of the Year finalists, 2004 retirees and Classified Employee of the Year nominees during Celebration 2004, an evening gala on May 12.

Dr. Cliff Barrineau, Dreher High’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year, was named as Richland One’s Teacher of the Year for 2004-05 and will represent the district in State Teacher of the Year competition. A 19-year veteran, he teaches Algebra II, SAT math and Pre-Calculus at Dreher and Geometry and Math Team at Hand Middle School. Earlier this year, he was named as recipient of the prestigious Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award and received National Board-Certification.

Barrineau received his undergraduate degree from Francis Marion and His master’s and doctorate from the University of South Carolina. A nationally board-certified teacher, he serves as coach of Hand’s championship MathCounts and math teams as well as Dreher High’s award-winning SAT and math teams.

His professional affiliations include the South Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the National Middle School Association.
He is a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where he serves as a canter with the choir and works with Troop 100 Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. He also is a member of Dreher’s band and athletic booster clubs.

The 2004-05 Classified Employee of the Year is Misha Lawyer, registered dietician in Student Nutrition Services. Lawyer is responsible for the nutritional health of more than 16,000 students and employees who eat in school cafeterias daily as well as nutritional education in the district
In the three years she has been with the district, Lawyer has established Student Nutrition Advisories at every district middle and high school. She speaks at PTO and SIC meetings and church groups on health and nutrition and is co-producer of "Living Smart," a series that looks at nutrition and health topics using Richland One students that is broadcast on ROTV, Time Warner Channel 12. This year, she coordinated the district’s first-ever Healthy Foods and Lifestyle Exposition.

A Ph.D. candidate in biochemistry-human metabolism, she holds a B.S. from the University of Texas, a M.S. in nutritional science with an emphasis in biochemistry from Texas Women’s University and completed her dietetic internship at Texas Medical Center.

Lawyer’s professional affiliations include the American Dietetic Association, Society of Nutritional Educators, Healthy Kids Network, South Carolina Anti-Hunger Network and School Nutrition Services Dietetic Practice Group.
