Special Event To Culminate Black History Month

Several Richland One schools will hold special programs and activities next week, as part of the culmination of their observance of Black History Month:

* On Monday, February 27, Meadowfield Elementary will conduct a live broadcast of its Black History Bowl. After researching various aspects of African-American history, teams of third-, fourth- and fifth-graders will compete in a game show that will be broadcast throughout the school. Contestants start hitting their buzzers at 8:00 a.m.

* On Monday, February 27, the chorus, band, step team, and dance ensemble of St. Andrews Middle School will perform skits and traditional African storytelling. Biographies of African-American leaders also will be presented. Two students will pay a special tribute to the late Coretta Scott King. The performances begin at 8:50 a.m.

* Fourth-graders at Logan Elementary have put together an electronic portfolio of famous African-Americans, which will be on display Monday, February 27. While at lunch, the students will portray these historical figures and only be allowed to have conversations about the persons they are portraying. This living theater event will be held from noon until 1:00 p.m.

* Dreher High School will hold its Black History Month Expo on Tuesday, February 28. The activities will run from 9:25-11:18 a.m. in the gym and the auditorium. Artists featured will include Ernest "The Funky Chicken" Lee and Carl Crawford, jazz musician Linton Smith and storyteller Aunt Pearlie Sue. Several agencies and organizations, including UNCF colleges and the Columbia Urban League, will have displays. The Jarvis Brothers of Orangeburg will perform at 9:40 a.m. in the auditorium, followed by Bill Pinkney and The Original Drifters at 10:25 a.m.

* On Tuesday, February 28, Bradley Elementary will celebrate the accomplishments of African-Americans in South Carolina. Third-graders have been studying South Carolina history for several weeks, and they have created a slide presentation based on their research. The slides, along with serenades from the fourth- and fifth-grade choir, will be presented at the Bradley PTA meeting, which begins at 6:00 p.m.
