Richland One Teacher Selected
As Finalist In State Teacher of the Year Program
Dr. Cliff Barrineau of Dreher High School is
one of five outstanding National Board-certified
classrooms teachers named today as finalists
in South Carolina's State Teacher of the
Year Program.
State Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum
said the five teachers, chosen from nominees
representing the state’s 85 local school
districts, will travel to Columbia March 7
for personal interviews with the seven-member
state Selection Committee. They are vying to
represent more than 45,000 South Carolina teachers
in the National Teacher of the Year Program.
"These professionals are master teachers,"
said Tenenbaum. "They are visionaries
and staunch advocates for public education
whose excitement for learning is contagious.
All of these finalists are role models for
their colleagues, always willing to share their
expertise to improve teaching techniques and
encouraging them to strive for excellence.
Their students and our state are fortunate
that they were called to teach."
A 19-year veteran of Richland One, Barrineau
has served as a math teacher at Lower Richland
High, Dreher High and Hand Middle. Currently,
he teaches Algebra II, SAT math and Pre-Calculus,
AP Statistics at Dreher and Geometry and Math
Team at Hand. In 2003, Barrineau received the
prestigious Milken Family Foundation National
Educator Award.
This teacher believes that what makes him
unique is his ability to give of himself in
such a way that students feel that there are
no strings attached. Available and accessible
to help them with their academic and personal
problems, Barrineau relates to them in such
a way that they respond and achieve. He realizes
that students have a sixth sense in searching
out teachers who are there for them, and he
is that person. He cheers for them, cries with
them, praises and encourages them, counsels
them, laughs with them - loving each
individual that he meets, not for how he can
make them better, but simply because they make
him better.
The new Teacher of the Year will work with
the South Carolina Center for Educator Recruitment,
Retention and Advancement and the South Carolina
Teacher Forum, whose members are district teachers
of the year. The sabbatical will include numerous
speaking engagements around the state before
civic and professional groups interested in
education. The teacher also will conduct workshops
for other teachers, discuss public education
issues with members of the General Assembly
and State Board of Education, and work closely
with the Teacher Cadet Program, a program that
encourages academically able students with
exemplary interpersonal and leadership skills
to consider teaching as a career.
The announcement of South Carolina’s
2005-06 Teacher of the Year will be made at
the Teacher of the Year Banquet May 7 in Columbia.
During the next school year, that teacher will
take a classroom sabbatical to serve as a statewide
ambassador for the profession. South Carolina’s
new Teacher of the Year also will receive a
$25,000 cash award, a BMW Z-4 to use for a
year, and a set of Michelin tires for his or
her personal vehicle.
The four remaining finalists, or Honor Roll
teachers, will receive $10,000 each and a set
of Michelin tires. Local district teachers
of the year will receive $1,000 each.
This year marks the 40th year of the South
Carolina Teacher of the Year Program, which
has grown tremendously in participation and
prestige. Corporate sponsorships and private
donations have funded the annual awards and
transformed the program into a major event
that honors the State Teacher of the Year,
Honor Roll teachers and district teachers of
the year.
