Richland One honors volunteers’ heart work

 

 

Richland School District One thanked hundreds of volunteers for their work with district students at its annual volunteer recognition breakfast held recently. This year’s theme was “Volunteering-A Work of Heart.”

The following special awards were presented:

2005 Volunteer of the Year Award to Tina Beauston, lead business contact for First Citizens Bank’s High Performance Partnership with W.G. Sanders Middle School. Beauston was recognized for work on such projects as student bank, Tuesday Tutoring, Accelerated Reader store, City Year Beautification Day, Job Shadowing Day and volunteer and teacher appreciation activities. Other nominees were: Sabrina Lindemann, Peggy Cwiakala, Carlton Harris, Jacquie Stewart, Ellen Adkins, Clarenza Tucker, Jennifer Taylor, Pastor John Lakin, Jr., Jody Spruill, Pamela Brown, Caroline Mallis, Mattie Bookhart, Bonita Chisholm, George and Minnie Taylor, Felicia Woods, Dan Bilderback and Connie Jones.

The Sam Hopkins Volunteer Administrator of the Year Award was presented to Karen Workman, guidance counselor and volunteer coordinator at Lewis Greenview Elementary School.  Other nominees were Gloris McClinton of Hyatt Park Elementary, Sallie Lakin of Lower Richland High, Yvonne Hall of Webber Elementary.

Partnership of the Year Award was presented to Colonial Supplemental Insurance Company for its partnership with St. Andrews Middle School that began in 2003. More than 80 percent of St. Andrews’ volunteers are Colonial employees. Programs they have implemented include Ravenous Readers, storytellers, Lunch Buddies, Junior Achievement, parental involvement workshops, student book club, math tutoring, classroom libraries and cultural enrichment. Other nominees were: Wachovia Bank, Palmetto Health, and Governor’s Office Continuum of Care,

The Volunteer Group of the Year Award was presented to Brennen Elementary School’s PTO whose achievements include: raising more than $80,000; coordinating more than 23,000 volunteer hours; providing the salary for a fulltime computer lab assistant; providing two volunteer office assistants each day and providing adult-supervised childcare at PTO meetings. Other nominees were: S.C. Department of Corrections, Keenan High Teacher Cadet Class, Crescent Hill Baptist Church, Hand Educational foundation, SAVVY Sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority-Gamma Nu Omega Chapter, Satchel Ford Safety Patrol, Webber Elementary SIC, Lower Richland PTSA, Odyssey of the Mind Coaches and Helpers at Brockman Elementary, SCANA-Association of Blacks in Energy.

Elementary Volunteer with the Most Hours: Leila Thompson of John P. Thomas Elementary who volunteered 1, 550 hours.

Middle School Volunteer with the Most Hours: Mary Ford of W.G. Sanders Middle with 563 hours.

High School Volunteer with the Most Hours: Norris Ashford of Eau Claire High School who logged 1, 920 hours.

The Stevenson Award of Excellence, which recognizes an administrator for excellence in volunteer administration, was presented to Dr. John Lane, principal of Hyatt Park Elementary School.  Other nominees were Wachovia Bank, Dorothy Ham, Leevette Mallloy and Dr. Denise Collier.
