Richland One teachers selected for Science
P.L.U.S. Institute
Six Richland One teachers have been selected
for the 2003 Science P.L.U.S. Institute at
Roper Mountain Science Center.
They are: Erin Gutierrez, Brockman Elementary;
Nadine Edney, Burton-Pack Elementary; Patricia
Prescott, John P. Thomas Elementary; Margaret
Choate, H.B. Rhame Elementary; Hattie Erving
at Hyatt Park Elementary; Nancy Boggs, A.C.
Moore Elementary; and Monica Lawton, Watkins-Nance
Elementary.
The institute, funded by a South Carolina
Education Improvement Act (EIA) grant, gives
intensive training in science teaching methods
and activities to public school science teachers.
The 11 courses include one-week sessions in
life science, earth science, astronomy and
space science, weather or physical science.
Classes are built around specific grade levels
corresponding to the S.C. Science Curriculum
Standards for grades 1-5.
A major goal of the institute is to provide
teachers not only with new skills and ideas,
but also to give them materials they need to
do hands-on science activities with their students.
Each teacher returns to the classroom with
science equipment and supplies worth more than
$500. |
