Richland One schools to observe American Education Week and National Children's Book Week

Richland One schools will open their doors to the community with special programs, open houses, invitations to lunch and other activities in observance of both American Education Week (AEW) and National Children’s Book Week, Nov. 18-122.

This year’s AEW theme is "Making Public Schools Great For Every Child!." The National Children’s Book Week theme is "Book Time."

The following is a listing of selected activities at schools throughout the district:

John P. Thomas Elementary-Parents are invited to share a talent, read a book, visit the classrooms and have lunch all week.

Bradley Elementary-Monday, Nov. 18 is Teacher Appreciation Day with a special breakfast at 7:15 a.m., Tuesday is Instructional Assistants Appreciation Day and Curl Up With A Good Book Day, Wednesday is Office Staff Appreciation Day Thursday is Custodial Staff Appreciation Day, and Friday is Cafeteria Staff Appreciation Day. Other activities at Bradley include PTA meeting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, AEW assembly on Wednesday at 9 a.m., Hat Day and Parent/Student Luncheon on Thursday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Forest Heights Elementary-Science Day will be observed on Friday, Nov. 22. The theme is "It's Not Magic, It's Science!"-- All students will participate in hands-on science activities.

Pendergrass Fairwold-Monday, Nov. 18 is AEW assembly.

Burton Pack Elementary- Tuesday, Nov. 19, Book Time from 8 a.m.-11 a.m., guest readers will read their favorite books to students.

Hyatt Park Elementary " Tuesday, Nov. 19 "Puppet Love" puppet show presentations from 8:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m., "Grits for Grandparents’. Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 8:30 a.m., "Dress Up For Education Day" students and staff were their best and AEW assembly program Thursday at 9 a.m. Wednesday, November 20, is "Curl Up and Read Day. " Students, parents and community friends will curl up with a favorite pillow or stuffed animal and read.

Brennen Elementary-Brennen is hosting author Tony Fredericks Wednesday-Friday. He writes non-fiction science books for children including Under One Rock, In One Tide Pool, Exploring the Universe, Exploring the Rainforest, Animal Sharpshooters and Camouflage Creatures. There will be student assembly programs Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and Thursday at 8:30 a.m. and classroom workshops for teachers, "What’s New in Science Ed" Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. He will present a workshop for parents, "Parents Make Reading Happen," Thursday at 7 p.m. Book signing will take place Friday afternoon.

Ho Hopkins Middle School-Parents are invited to have lunch with students Thursday, Nov. 21.

Gadsden Elementary School- Columbia Marionette Theatre presents "Litter Trashes Everyone" Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 12:30 p.m. Parents and community members are invited to attend.

H Hand Middle School -Seventh-and eighth-grade students present Drama Monologue Night Tuesday, November 19 from 5:45p.m. -7 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 6 p.m.-7:15 p.m. In collaboration with drama and history teachers, all seventh and eighth graders have researched an historical figure who created significant change and will give voice to that person in a monologue. Students also will dress in an original, historical costume created for $10 or less.

Alc Alcorn Middle School "Parents and students are invited to attend "Muffins with Mom and Donuts with Dad" breakfast Thursday, Nov. 21 from 8:45 am-10a.m. Parents and students will choose a book and take turns reading to each other.

Lo Logan Elementary School students will present an Earth Day performance at 6 p.m. Funded by S.C. Arts Commission and State Department of Education ABC grants, the production is choreographed by Terrance Henderson with music by Edward Gordon, Wendy Velario and Chris Lee, Logan’s music teacher. Logan’s steel band, African dance group and other fine arts students are participating in the production.

Dr Dreher High School will host guest readers on Tuesday November 19 and Thursday, November 21. Guests include Dr. Epps, Sheriff Lott, and officers from the Columbia Police Department.

AC A.C. Flora High School will host its annual Faculty and Staff breakfast on Thursday, November 21, at 7:30 am. There will also be a teachers’ baby picture contest. On Friday, November 22, Dr. Kwame Dawes, Associate Professor and M.F.A. Program Director, Department of English, USC College of Liberal Arts, will conduct a poetry session with participants of the Split Pea project.
