Richland School District One
is hosting its second annual faith-based convocation
Tuesday, April 29 at the Adam’s Mark Hotel. This
year’s theme is “Standing On Common Ground.”
Faith-based organizations throughout the Midlands have
been invited to participate.
The general session begins
at 8:45 a.m. The keynote speaker is Dr. Vivia Fowler, the
R. Wright Spears Professor of Religion and Director of
General Education at Columbia College.
Small-group sessions from
9:40 a.m.-11:25 a.m. include No Child Left Behind,
presented by Linda Bowers-Richland One; Youth Mentoring,
presented by Rev. C.L. Lorick, S.C. Office of the Attorney
General; After-School Programs, presented by
Zelda Q. Waymer, S.C. After-School Alliance; Successful
Partnerships, presented by Claire Kinney, Rhame
Elementary and Brenda Sheet, St. Andrews Baptist Church; Tips
on Grant Writing, presented by Dr. Joyce
Buxton-Richland One; Transitioning Students,
presented by Chaplain Wendell Price, S.C. Dept. of
Juvenile Justice; and Establishing Partnerships,
presented by Stacey Bryant-Richland One.
A panel discussion on “Gangs
and Violence Awareness” will be held from 11:30
a.m.-12:30 a.m.
The luncheon speaker (12:30
p.m.-1:30 p.m.) is Ako Kambon, president of Visionary
Leaders Institute of Columbus, Ohio. He is a nationally
recognized leader in the fields of educational consulting
and providing cultural sensitivity training. The
district’s faith-based partnerships will be recognized
at the lunch.
