The S.C. Association of School Administrators (SCASA) has
named Dr. Steve Wilson, principal of W.J. Keenan High
School, as the 2003 Secondary Principal of the Year. He
will represent South Carolina in the national-level awards
program, sponsored by the National Association of
Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
A graduate of Benedict College with a B.S. in
biology, Wilson received a Master of Agricultural
Education degree from Clemson University. He completed
additional graduate work in industrial education at
Clemson and in secondary school administration at Winthrop
University. Her received his doctoral degree in curriculum
and instruction from S.C. State University
Wilson has been principal of Keenan High School since
1998. Previously, he served as principal of Newberry High
and as an assistant principal at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High
and Fairfield Central High Schools. He taught science and
agriculture for 10 years. |

According to Helen Jones, Richland One’s area
superintendent for Keenan High School, "Dr. Wilson has
been instrumental in creating a learning environment in
which students are encouraged to pursue academically
challenging courses. Through his efforts, more Advanced
Placement (AP) courses are available for students, and a
news SAT/ACT lab is in place to support student
learning." She
added, "He has challenged the parents and community to
become actively involved in school improvement efforts and
recently received the distinction of having the most
parent and community volunteer hours among the
district’s seven high schools."
Among his leadership accomplishments at Keenan is
Project REAL, collaboration with the University of South
Carolina’s College of Engineering.
The
mission of Keenan’s Project REAL (Raider Engineering and
Academic Leadership) is to actively engage students in
math and science courses that are enriched with
engineering applications to increase their academic
performance in math, science, engineering and
technology-related fields at the post-secondary level.
Through the partnership, Keenan students will be exposed
to a rigorous curriculum based on high standards and the
expectation that all students will achieve at high levels
in math and science. The collaboration with USC will widen
course offerings at Keenan to include pre-engineering
courses. In addition, USC will provide opportunities for
Keenan students to earn dual credit by taking college
courses at no cost except the initial registration fee.
Wilson’s professional affiliations include:
SCASA, NASSP, Association for Supervision and Curriculum
Development, S.C. Association of Black School Educators
and the S.C. Secondary Principals Association.
He is a major in the U.S. Army Reserves and a
member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
