Dreher
student makes perfect score, team advances
in state SAT competition
David Wang of Dreher High School scored a
perfect 118 in the first round, helping his
school win AAA region 5 in the South Carolina
SAT competition and advance to the Lower State
finals.
Dreher is the defending AAA state champion,
having successfully defended its title for
two consecutive years.
Students from 125 high schools participated
in regional competition over the past few weeks. Students
took a specially designed two-hour, 118-question
exam that was divided into two sections of
math and two sections of verbal questions.
Team and individual winners now advance to
the upper or lower state finals Feb. 24-27,
and then on to the state finals March 10 where
state winners receive trophies and medallions.
"This academic competition continues
to provide our students with a fun and challenging
environment for high achievement," Tenenbaum
said. "Any time you see a perfect
score during the competition, you know the
students take this very seriously and work
very hard."
A.C. Flora High was AAA region 5 runner-up.
Teams from Lower Richland, Columbia and Keenan high
schools also participated in the competition.
The SAT contest is open to all schools that
are members of the South Carolina High School
League, and participation is voluntary. After
Round 1, each region sends team and individual
winners to the upper or lower state finals,
and from there to the state finals. Each
classification, A, AA, AAA and AAAA, crowns
team and individual winners. An overall
individual winner is also named.
Team scores for A class schools are based
on the top six student scores, AA team scores
are based on the top ten individual scores,
AAA team scores on the highest 15 scores and
AAAA scores on the top 20. Each competing
school can test up to five more students than
are needed for the team score.
