Dreher
High School ‘s United States Academic Decathlon (USAD)
team won the South Carolina USAD championship and will
represent the state in national competition in Erie,
Pennsylvania April 23-26.
The
purpose of the USAD is to develop and provide academic
competitions, curriculum and assessment in order to
promote learning and academic excellence through teamwork
among students of all achievement levels. Teams are
composed of A students (honor), B students (scholastic)
and C students (varsity).
Team
scores are computed by taking the top two honors,
scholastic and varsity scores. The competition, which is
the most vigorous general academic contest in the nation,
consists of 10 individual events.
In
the overall competition, Mary Kathryn Keane was the gold
medallist, David Wang won the silver and Andrew Ruffin
took the bronze.
In
individual events, Dreher’s team captured 23 medals,
including eight gold, nine silver and six bronzes.
