Richland One Announces Top
Employees of the Year
Richland One congratulates
the winners of the district's top employee
awards. Winners were announced May 10 at Celebration
2006, where the district honored Teachers of
the Year and Classified Employees of the Year
from each school, Substitute Teachers of the
Year and employees who are retiring.
2006-2007
Teacher of the Year:
Iona
Sunday, a science teacher at Crayton
Middle School with 16 years of teaching
experience. Ilona Sunday has developed numerous science curriculums, projects
and programs that make learning an exciting hands-on adventure for her students.
She has received state and national recognitions including the 1999 Presidential
Award for Excellence in Science Teaching, the nation’s highest award
for K - 12 teaching. |

2006-2007 Classified
Employee of the Year
Carolyn Duff, a registered school nurse at A.C. Moore Elementary. Carolyn Duff
has won double honors this school year. In December 2005 she was selected as
the SC School Nurse of the Year. Duff is a nationally certified school nurse
with nine years of school experience. In addition to mending scraped knees and
administering medication to students, she schedules eye, dental and doctor appointments
for students that otherwise would not get medical attention. She promotes exercise
at A.C. Moore and is a regular guest on the school’s TV show encouraging
students to practice healthy habits, such as eating balanced meals. |

Substitute Teacher of the Year
Alexzena
Furgess. With only one year of substitute
teaching experience, Alexzena Furgess
won the hearts and respect of the
students she taught this year. Her warmth,
initiative and unwavering belief in her
students made her stand out as this year’s
winner. |

Most
Years of Service
Conchita Edens
of Columbia High School, with 42 years
of service! As a choral teacher, Edens
won many awards and honors over the years.
One of her most famous students is former
Miss America Kimberly Aiken Cockerham. |
