Richland
School District One receives two Knight Foundation
grants
Richland School District One has received
two grants from the John S. and James L. Knight
Foundation to support middle school after-school
program.
The district received a grant of $250, 000
for the continuation of key portions of the
after-school programs at Alcorn, W.A. Perry
and Gibbes middle schools. These include: assisting
middle school students in meeting standards
in core courses; enhancing the social and cultural
development of students; increasing parental
participation in school-elated activities;
and forming meaningful community partnerships.
The second grant of $75,000 is to be used
to provide on-and off-site arts-related enrichment
activities for students enrolled in after-school
programs at Alcorn, W.A. Perry and Gibbes during
the 2003-04 school year.
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation
promotes excellence in journalism worldwide
and invests in the vitality of 26 U.S. communities,
including Columbia, where The State, a Knight
Ridder newspaper, is published.
