Richland School District One receives two Knight Foundation grants

Richland School District One has received two grants from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to support middle school after-school program.

The district received a grant of $250, 000 for the continuation of key portions of the after-school programs at Alcorn, W.A. Perry and Gibbes middle schools. These include: assisting middle school students in meeting standards in core courses; enhancing the social and cultural development of students; increasing parental participation in school-elated activities; and forming meaningful community partnerships.

The second grant of $75,000 is to be used to provide on-and off-site arts-related enrichment activities for students enrolled in after-school programs at Alcorn, W.A. Perry and Gibbes during the 2003-04 school year.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation promotes excellence in journalism worldwide and invests in the vitality of 26 U.S. communities, including Columbia, where The State, a Knight Ridder newspaper, is published.
